So probably my favorite current shows (current because The Wire will always be the greatest) on TV are Game of Thrones and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Now, the reason I love It's Always Sunny is that it's super funny. Even though I love to laugh, I don't like too many comedies. Most either have unfunny material, or are lazy. Let's be honest: things that are "polite" typically aren't funny. If you've ever read "Family Circus", it's probably the least funny comic in the history of comics. And being inappropriate also doesn't automatically make you funny. Carlos Mencia's "jokes" are all a bunch of stereotypes strung together. And the punchline is "Haha, stereotype!" Not funny. Same with Larry the Cable Guy, except he's not offensively bad like Mencia.
Now, It's Always Sunny is great because it combines great subject matter with a hilarious script. The things that the episodes are written about are, let's be honest, hilarious. "Haha glory hole" is not a joke. But it's about a quarter of the battle. And if there's a funny concept, It's Always Sunny is always willing to tackle it, and it will usually tackle it in a funny way. But what really puts it on its own level as a scripted comedy is that the actors always know what the next step is. Since the show was created by the actors before anyone knew who they were (Danny DeVito aside, and he joined the cast later), their characters are, to some extent, a reflection of the actors (not in the sense that the actors are like the characters they play, but in the sense that the characters do things that the actors find funny). Well, apparently, this past season, one of the main characters (and the show's created), Mac, decided that the show needed more fat jokes. Because, let's be real, well-executed fat jokes (on a scripted show, not in real life) are funny. Problem was, Danny DeVito aside, none of the actors were fat. So Mac decided to solve the problem by... putting on 50 pounds. Not in a fat suit, but by eating a whole lot. The result is what I think will be the funniest season of the show yet. And it's a really, really funny show. For anyone who's curious, here are Mac's fat pictures.
Mac is Fat!
